Esalen̉
Massage
|
Esalen̉
(pronounced Ess-ah-lin)
massage began in the early 1960’s at the Esalen Institute in Big Sur,
California – a center devoted to the exploration of human potential.
It has evolved over the years and has been influenced by many people and
a variety of disciplines including psychology, sensory awareness, yoga, and
meditation. |
|
Esalen̉
massage draws from the Swedish and Trager massage
traditions and from sensory awareness – it is a method of encouraging people
to get in touch with their bodies through the art of touch.
The slow and mindful Esalen̉
massage is an integration of long and lengthening strokes, gentle rocking and
stretching, and deep muscle detail.
Its flowing and rhythmic approach emphasizes the whole person – body,
mind, and spirit – rather than a summary of parts encouraging stress
reduction, heightened breath and body awareness, and deep relaxation.
Personal attention takes precedence over technique, making each massage
session unique experience.
It is a healthy way to handle stress and promote both physical and
emotional healing.

Esalen̉
massage
flows from moment to moment.
It is a non-invasive, non-painful approach that brings awareness to the
body and away from habitual thought patterns.
During an Esalen̉
massage,
the practitioner and recipient tune in and go on a flowing rhythmic journey that
includes a shared observation of the innate capacity for self-healing from
within through deep relaxation and breath.
The recipient is gently urged to become an “active” participant
through heightened body awareness and surrendering to a deep sensing place.
The practitioner encourages and enables the client to tune into his or
her own realm and breadth of sensation, emotion, and mobility.
Practitioners learn to listen to a wide and wonderful guiding “voice”
that speaks clearly in regard to the application, duration, pressure, and the
unique “attention” that is uniquely and essentially characteristic of a
great Esalen̉
massage.
More than just “intuition”, it is a transcendence that brings
transformation to both the giver and the receiver.
